At Bicycle Tours of Atlanta we are very committed to your safety.
If you are taking one of our tours or venturing out on your own, we want to do everything we can to keep you safe!
All our course curriculum has been developed by the League of American Bicyclists(LAB) – the “go to” organization for Bicycle Safety. Whether you’re an experienced cyclist or new to the streets, we have a program that will teach you the knowledge, skills, and confidence you need to ride safely. All classes are led by a League Cycling Instructor, certified through the LAB and are experts in bicycle education and safety.
Regularly Scheduled Classes
Urban Cycling Education Series is a Two Module program. Module One, a classroom session focuses on the principles and best practices of safe cycling. Module Two is held outdoors where students will participate in parking lot drills and a one hour urban group ride. Course fee is $65. Core Cycling Module #1
2.5 hours/Classroom course
Safe Cycling Principles and Lane Positioning:
Knowing where to position a bike on the roadway for high visibility and how to communicate with motorists are the most critical cycling skills you can learn. Learning about motorist and bicycle accident statistics will help cyclists understand the importance of practicing specific safe principles in traffic. After completing this course, the student will view “Sharing the Road” in a completely new light, be it behind the wheel of a car or on their bike. This course is for anyone concerned about riding with traffic and for seasoned cyclists who have never learned how to effectively negotiate with motorist.This is also recommended for motorist interested in “sharing the road” safely with cyclists. Students do not need to bring their bikes to Module One.
Topics Include:
- cyclists responsibilities & rights per Georgia Law
- bike and car accident statistics
- rider predictably, visibility and awareness
- potential hazards and dangerous scenarios
- best practices in cycling etiquette to encourage motorists cooperation
- when and how you should safely take a lane
- crossing multiple lanes for left hand turns
- lane positioning to ensure high visibility and clear communication to motorists
- accessories and necessary tools for smart and safe cycling
Core Cycling Module #2
3 hours/Parking lot drills and road course
Crash Avoidance and Emergency Maneuvers:
Knowing inherent dangers while cycling and learning emergency maneuvers will help you avoid crashes. in this class, students will develop a solid foundation of bike handling, balance and control skills that will dramatically increase their confidence. You will take these new skills and principles “on the road” in a 1 hour practice group ride in a urban roadway setting. Students are required to bring their bikes in good working condition to Module Two.
Topics Include:
- scanning (looking behind you) while maintaining a straight line
- quick stops (shorten your stopping distance up to 50%)
- quick right and left turns in the event a car turns in front of you
- dodging objects while maintaining control
- staying in control in windy conditions
- understanding how/when to shift gears
- basic maintenance and tire change
